A bright author of operas, he was only 18 years old when he had his first debut with “ La cambiale di matrimonio”, But what made him really famous was his version of the: Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) by Beaumarchais. It’s a love story between a Count and a poor girl that will end up in a marriage after some tormented adventures.
Gioacchino Rossini was born in Pesaro ( a lovely town in Le Marche Region in Italy) in February 1792. Often referred to as “the Italian Mozart”, Rossini was a very prolific musician that in 29 years composed more than thirty-nine significant operas. He is actually considered one of the most prominent opera authors in history. Some of his operas are “L’italiana in Algeri” (The Italian Woman in Algiers), “La Cenerentola” (Cinderella), Otello and Mose in Egitto (Moses in Egypt).
By the age of 21, Rossini had established himself as the idol of the Italian opera public. He continued to write operas for Venice and Milan .
Rossini’s most famous opera though, was produced on 20 February 1816, at the Teatro Argentina in Rome: Le Barbier de Séville.
He was born into a family of artists: his father, Giuseppe, was a horn player; his mother, Anna, was a singer and He spent his life between Italy and France, returning eventually to his native country after falling physically and mentally ill.
Once in Italy and recovering from his illness, he slowly returned to music, composing little works intended for private performance. These included his Péchés de vieillesse (“Sins of Old Age”), which are grouped into 14 volumes, mostly for solo piano, occasionally for voice and various chamber ensembles.
Pesaro – his native town – celebrates the death of Rossini every year in November. Lately the town has been listed under the UNESCO’s “Creative Cities” thanks to this amazing composer. The town is also known as the “City of Bicycles”, due to its big net of bicycle paths.
