UMBRIA – The Spello’s Infiorate and Quintana
Umbria, which one of the central Regions of Italy, is rich of events during the month of June. One of the most famous is the Infiorata di Spello – known also as The Flower Festival. On the occasion of the Corpus Domini feast, on the ninth Sunday after Easter, almost a thousand people work incessantly to create carpets and pictures made of flowers along the narrow streets of Spello.
Thousands of flowers are collected in the countryside by the Infioratori – collectors of flowers. Differently from other similar manifestations, Spello’s Infiorate creators compose their splendid carpets using flowers collected in the wild. While the use of other parts of the plants, like leaves and berries is allowed, the preference is given to the use of petals only, either fresh or dried.Throughout the city you can enjoy the views of these wonderful creations made on the road.
Another famous event in Umbria is the Quintana of Foligno , a historical re-enactment of the ancient Giostra della Quintana (Joust of the Quintana) of 1600, which is an annual historical event inspired by the medieval equestrian competition that will bring the city back in time.
The term Quintana refers to the fifth street of the Roman military camp, where the soldiers would usually train with horses and spears. The Giostra della Quintana is one of the best known and most popular horse races in Italy, so much to be referred to as The Olympics of the Equestrian Competitions. For this occasion typical taverns of Foligno will be offering typical medieval food as well as parades of people wearing historical costumes will walk the streets of the town.
